Frequently Asked Questions by teachers
1. Do I need to be a qualified language tutor?
No, not really, this is only preferable. You could be a university student who wishes to teach other students, or you could be a housewife with professional skills who wishes to teach part time. However, students expect a degree of proficiency from teachers, so it would be better if you had a vocation for teaching the language rather than just seeing it as a way of making money.
2. Do I need to be a native speaker of the language I teach?
It is not a mandatory requirement as long as you know how to teach the language.
3. How do I get paid?
Students pay you directly for your lesson. To avoid problems, it may be one idea to set a "Prepaid system for a few lessons" after you have given the first trial lesson. This will give students the motivation to set up another lesson and avoid sudden cancellations. Payment after each lesson can sometimes cause inconveniences like sudden cancellations just a few hours before the lesson. We also advise you to discuss cancellation policy terms and conditions with your students. (Refer 5)
4. How much should I charge?
It is totally up to you. However we advise you to set an average fee or lower, as you will get 100% of the fee directly from the students. We do not benefit from any commissions.
5. How can I avoid sudden cancellation?
We advise you to talk with students about cancellation policy terms and conditions to avoid sudden cancellations. One idea is to set a prepaid system for 2 or 3 lessons and explain that any cancellations have to be notified 24 hours prior to the lesson, otherwise you will deduct the lesson fee from the prepaid amount. This will give students the motivation to set up another lesson and avoid sudden cancellations.
6. How do I get contacted by students?
First you need to post your profile on the website. We will email you when you receive messages from prospective students. Then you can start a conversation with the students through your "My page" to arrange the first appointment. In order to read and respond to messages, you will need to upgrade your membership to Premium.
7. Where do I teach?
It is up to you and your students. We strongly recommend meeting your students for the first few times in a public place like a quiet cafe or a public library, your school/university library or your/student's office.
8. Do I have to give the first lesson free of charge?
Not really, but if you can give the first trial lesson either free of charge or at a discounted price, this may appeal to students.
9. How can I update my profile?
You can update it from your "My page". Just login with your registered email address and password.
10. Can I ask for a down payment?
It is up to you. However, many students are accessing FindMyFavouriteTeacher.com to have a choice of teachers and flexibility. We know that down payment with a fixed term is not a welcomed idea by many students. In order to avoid problems, it may be one idea to set a "Prepaid system for a few lessons" after you have given the first trial lesson. This will give students the motivation to set up further lessons again and also avoid sudden cancellations. Payment after each lesson may sometimes cause inconveniences like sudden cancellations. We also advise you to discuss cancellation policy terms and conditions with your students.
11. I am busy (or going on holiday) and will not be able to teach for a
while, do I have to delete my profile?
No, you can update your availability status from your "My page".
12. Can I ask students for a refund of travel expenses?
We advise you to discuss this with your students taking into consideration where the lesson will be held. If the lesson will take place considerably far from your home town and will incur travel time, but the students still want a lesson with you, then it is perhaps a good idea to talk about your travel expenses.
13. I have completed payment with PayPal, but still cannot be upgraded to Premium.
Our website is designed and linked with PayPal website to upgrade you when you come back to our site directly from Paypal payment completion page.
